2015 RSC June Light Blue Week 4, Doll Quilt and "Let's Book It" Baby Quilt From Men's Shirts

This was the last RSC week using light blue scraps and I have a little to show today. The two crumb blocks I made last week are now a pot holder. A cotton knitted dish cloth made it into the picture. I'm working through partial balls of yarn.
Something new. I used a light blue men's shirt pocket in the back of a pot holder. I slipped a remote control in the pocket to show that is a functional pocket. A few family members suggested I make some pot holders with pockets in the backs to slip their hands into while using the padded side to hold or retrieve hot trays from the oven. This pot holder was made with scraps created when I was cutting up men's shirts for the charity baby quilt shown later in this post. The idea to use a man's shirt pocket on one side of a pot holder came from "The Scrappy Quilter's post." Until I saw this post, I was going to toss the pocket into the trash bin. Mother wants the pocket pot holder in the picture so it will go to her.
To see what others made with their blue scraps go here Saturday morning.

Earlier this week I pieced four 8.5" red, white, blue blocks to donate during our monthly guild meeting. That was Tuesday. Guild members turn them into Home Town Hero Quilts.

My plastic tub of 2" scrappy squares was looking lonely so I pulled 121 of them to make the center of this DOLL quilt to sell in the boutique we set up at our annual guild quilt show. Money raised helps buy supplies to make charity quilts. I turned it in Tuesday, too.

It's time to work on a "Let's Book It" project. I have several pattern books and patterns as well as loads of saved links for all kinds of quilty things on my computer. This month I went to my computer "Favorites File" and found this saved link to a baby quilt posted in 2013 by the Fat Quarter Shop. Kimberly used jelly roll strips to make her baby quilt, but I thought it would be a good pattern to use to make my first quilt using fabrics from deconstructed cotton men's shirts.
Previously I bought some cotton men's shirts at the local Goodwill Store and deconstructed them ... but ... have been reluctant to cut into them further. This seemed like a good opportunity. The quilt pictured above required 108 pieces of fabric cut into 2.5" x 6.5" rectangles.

The backing is yellow with teeny tiny white butterflies. They have two black dots on their wings. The binding was cut for the back piece of a green men's shirt. It's quilted with a loose free motion meander using cream cotton thread. After a go in the washer and dryer, it finished at about 35" square. It will be a charity quilt.
The pot holder in the picture was made with skinny trimmings created while cutting the pieces for the baby quilt top. This is the front of the light blue men's pocket pot holder shown in the first picture.

2015 RSC June Light Blue Week 3, RSC Tumbler Quilt Finished, Child Tote Bag

Not a lot of scrappy light blue activity to show for the week. The two crumb blocks I made last week are now a pot holder. Working from my crumb collection, I made two more 8.5" crumb blocks. They will become a pot holder this week. A cotton knitted dishcloth made it into the picture.
To see what others made with their scraps, go here Saturday morning.

I finally sewed together the 5" tumbler units I cut from scraps during the 2013 RSC. They are now a quilt with a medium blue border.

I pieced the backing with fabric from stash and a row of string blocks made with strips from my bin of 1.5" strips. It's quilted with a loose free motion meander. The binding is a purple print. After a go in the washer and dryer it finished at 58" x 84.5".
Bonnie Hunter announced on Facebook that the 2015 Ender Leader Challenge will be tumblers. I'll be making another tumbler quilt this year.

This week I made a child size tote with some Laura Burch prints.

For the pattern I took a sheet of copy paper and cut 2" x 2" squares from two corners. Using the pattern, I cut two pieces of outer bag fabric, two pieces of lining fabric and two pieces of batting. I also cut two piece of medium weight fusible interfacing which I have already fused to the outer bag pieces. I cut two rectangle pieces 18" x 4" for the handles. (I trimmed the two pieces in the picture.) I added a piece of batting, 1" x 18" to each handle to give them more body. An interior pocket is optional, but I wanted one for this little bag. That's the square of blue fabric laying on one piece of the lining. Actually it's folded in half in the picture. The 2.5" x 8" rectangle will be the loop. I was going to use the red button in the picture, but felt a pink one looked better.

There is a close up showing the loop and button closure. There are so many ways to make totes. Lots of YouTube tutorial video clips. At least three ways to make boxed bottoms. I'll be making more totes in more sizes.

2015 RSC June Light Blue Week 2

Though it was a busy week, I found some time to sew. The two light blue crumb blocks in last Saturday's post are now a pot holder. I pieced two more 8.5" crumb blocks that I'll turn into another pot holder this week. Pot holders/hot pads make nice little gifts as people seem to like them. A cotton knitted dishcloth made it into the picture. Knitted dishcloths make nice little gifts, too. The three Teeny Tiny Zipper Pouches in the picture were made using this YouTube video tutorial posted by Debbie from SEW SO EASY. Yes. Made them with Laurel Burch cat fabric. They are for our guild's annual quilt show Boutique. Money raised is used to buy fabric, batting and supplies for charity quilts.
To see what others made this week with their light blue scraps, go here.
So ... not much to show in this post. Still quilting my tumblers quilt pieced with the tumbler units cut during the 2013 RSC. The quilting is slow going as I'm using my domestic sewing machine. HOPEFULLY I'll finish it this week and post pictures Saturday.
Good news! Another colorful, scrappy tumbler quilt in my future. Bonnie Hunter announced on Facebook that the new "2015 Quiltville Ender Leader Project" will be TUMBLERS!

2015 RSC June Light Blue Week 1, Sweet Cheeks Finished, Jelly Roll Race Quilt Finish

Before pulling out my light blue scraps, I finished a few green items I started last month. The two 8.5" green crumb blocks made last week are now a pot holder. The green cotton knitted dishcloth will be added to my dishcloth collection. The pot holders and dishcloths are nice little gifts.
After sewing light blue crumbs, skinny strings and trimmings onto paper, I'll add a 12.5" block to my collection. The two light blue 8.5" crumb blocks will become a pot holder this week. To see what others made with their light blue scraps go here Saturday morning.

I finished "Sweet Cheeks" the baby quilt I pieced earlier this week for my May "Let's Book It" project. I chose fabrics that worked nicely with the Paddington Bear focal fabric.
"Sweet Cheeks" is a baby quilt pattern from Rachel Griffith's book, "Quilts Made With Love". Rachel has a blog found here.

The backing is pieced. It's quilted with a free motion meander and bound with blue. After a go in the washer and dryer it finished at 34.5" square. I'll take this donation baby quilt to our guild's May meeting.

Earlier this year I pieced a "homemade jelly roll" race quilt top and put it aside where it became a UFO.

The backing is colorful fat quarters. How much fun is that! It's quilted with organic wavy lines using my walking foot and bound with blue fabric. After a go in the washing machine and dryer it finished at 52.5" x 63.5". This is another donation quilt that I'll take to our May guild meeting. I think a child will love it.
My friend Sharon gave me the Paddington Bear fabric in the baby quilt and the fat quarters used in the race quilt backing. Thank you, dear friend.

Let's Book It 2015 May Project, Sweet Cheeks

For my "Let's Book It" May project, I chose another baby quilt pattern in Rachel Griffith's book called "Quilts Made With Love." I've had this book awhile and made "Bitty Baby" a few months ago. The quilt top pictured above, "Sweet Cheeks", is on page 15. I've also pieced the backing and the batting. It's a quilt sandwich ready to quilt. As I have two other quilts that I'm quilting on now, it will be a few weeks before I get to this sweet little quilt. I'll post a better picture then.
I tried to chose fabrics and colors that are both boy and girl friendly. "Sweet Cheeks" will be a donation quilt that I want to have ready to turn in during our June's guild meeting later this month.
To see other "Let's Book It" projects, go here. Sharon Vrooman has a post were we can link up our May projects.
