It's a new Rainbow Scrap Challenge year with Angela at Soscrappy. Happily, January's color choice is GREEN! Pictured are the starts of four quilts. Two crayon blocks for two youth quilts. They are great for gifts or donation. I made six 16-Patch blocks because I can never have too many 16-Patch blocks. They can be turned into quilts of all sizes, pot holders, mug rugs, etc. I started a pastel string block quilt. Pictured are two stacks, 48 blocks in all.
It has two places for the ladies to stand or sit on their feet at night and a window for light and ventilation. The front of the coop is storage area which will nice when I get it organized.
The coop is underpinned with wire. Don't want a predator to have and raise it's young under my coop! A small mesh wall under the coop allows the girls to use about half the area under the coop. They like to walk down the ramp from their coop into the poultry pen and then under the coop if it's raining or if they want some shade.
They are allowed to free range an hour or so most every day while I'm outside with them. Again, sooooo many predators.
There's a lot to do outside. Preparations for a small garden is only one project. A big tree that fell last fall and a few trees that we downed that were leaning dangerously toward the house need to be cleaned up. The leaves with be future garden mulch. The wood will feed the fire pit this summer when we heat up hot dogs and toast marshmallows on sticks. But today, we are waiting for some snow.Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12527472166860525332noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-377824417026124469.post-91970931470658719292019-12-21T07:38:00.001-08:002019-12-27T10:09:47.857-08:002019 RSC December Eye of God Quilt Finish, 49-Patch Quilt Finish, 16-Patch Quilt Finish, Doll Quilts

Lots of sewing happening since my last post. Been pulling RSC colorful blocks from my "construction box". It's a plastic tub I fill during the year with each month's blocks. Not pictured is a second Eye of God block quilt that went to a granddaughter. I gave it to her before I remembered to take a picture. All the blocks for granddaughter's quilt were made this year and was much like the one pictured above. Both quilts finished at about 53.5" x 69".
I make RSC house blocks every year and have for years. Usually I use Bonnie Hunter's Happy House Block pattern found on her Quiltville blog under the free pattern tab. Pictured are two donation doll quilts made with eight blocks pulled from the construction box.

There's more in the construction box. Sprout blocks, house blocks, 64-patch blocks, 16-patch blocks, string blocks and plastic sandwich bags of colorful squares and rectangles sit ready to be turned into more RSC blocks and quilts during next year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge.
I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas.Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12527472166860525332noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-377824417026124469.post-46061440961831733302019-11-10T09:17:00.004-08:002019-11-10T09:22:31.392-08:002019 Quilt Show, Ebenezer Quilt, Doll Quilt

"Fractured Light" won a "Best Use of Color" ribbon from the quilt show judge during our annual September quilt show. It's currently hanging in the local Public Library. Looking at this colorful quilt makes me smile. Blocks for this quilt and two other quilts I entered this year were made during this year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge. I loved this challenge hosted by Angela at Soscrappy.
Because I worked most of the time during our quilt show, I had no time to take pictures.
It was a great show with beautiful quilts! A local TV show came and filmed most of Saturday during the quilt show. They are preparing a segment that will air later this year. Our guild was surprised and thrilled to see them. We had record attendance and called the quilt show a big success. Big smiles every where.
It has been a busy time since I last posted. I have a new chicken coop and hope to post pictures soon. I made some receiving blankets that were given away without pictures. I continue to sew my RSC blocks together into quilts. This works for me because November and December are busy with Christmas sewing. Above is the quilt using RSC string blocks with one odd color string in each block. I'm calling it RSC Fractured Light. Fractured Light for short. It's quilted with a loose free motion meander and finished at 58" x 79". I like it.

The RSC color this month is PINK. I like pink. Needing to start turning RSC accumulating blocks, into something, I pulled my blocks made with 2"x 3.5" pieces, make six blocks with purple to make this RSC throw quilt that I call Sew Scrappy Rainbow. It's quilted with a meander and finished at about 54"x 72".
I also pulled my Growing Up Odd RSC blocks, make some additional blocks with other colors to finish this quilt I call Whimsically Growing Up Odd. It's quilted with a free motion meander and finished at about 64" x 82". The free pattern tutorial for this block is at weddingdressblue.wordpress.com.
The last three quilts I have made are wavy, not flat and don't hang nicely. Though I did a lot of pressing and measuring during construction, flat quilt tops didn't happen. Sewing and quilting tips would be appreciated. Question. Getting close to our Quilt Guild Annual Quilt Show in September and I need to finish some quilts to enter. I used a pattern, Color Me, by Emily Herrick Designs to make this crayon quilt. I had some crayon blocks made, but had to step up my RSC game to finish this RSC quilt early. It's quilted with a loose free motion meander. The binding is 8.5" pieces of fabric. After a go in the washer and dryer it finished at 47" x 61". A good size for a toddler or small child.

There was some playing catch up with Turquoise blocks. I needed a turquoise Eye of God block and six house blocks. I cut some more 6.5" squares and made some 6.5" 4-patch blocks in orange and turquoise. Three pot holders made it into the picture. To see what others made with orange go here.
I needed a quick baby quilt for a gift. So I pulled 6.5" blocks cut for another project and sewed them together for this cute baby quilt. It's quilted with a free motion meander and finished at about 44" x 52".
I love having blocks cut and made up in advance that can quickly and easily be turned into baby quilts.
And now for some chick news.
I bought these little chicks when they were a few days old. Now they are about seven weeks old. They have been outside in their little coup for a few weeks and they love it. They are Ameraucanas, friendly, don't mind confined spaces and will lay blue eggs.

I bought these chicks a few weeks ago for a quarter each. I think the two largest chicks are two weeks older than the black and white chicks. The gold chick may be a week older . I've always felt that I may have three ages of chicks here. Any way. The gold colored chicks are Golden Sex Link chickens and the two black and white chicks are Barred Rock chickens. For now, the larger chicks seem to protect the small chicks. They all will lay brown eggs. Pictured above are eight yellow sprouts and some yellow RSC sampler blocks. Academic Quilter did a wonderful tutorial for a flower block. It was awesome. However, lazy me opted out for a square of yellow with a flower print. I'm still thinking about the applique peel block. My bad.
February's Rainbow Scrap Challenge color is YELLOW. Pictured are eight 16-patch blocks, ten string blocks with an odd color string, and three hot pads.
I want to make a RSC crayon quilt smaller than the one I made last year and I like the crayon quilt pattern by Emily Herrick called "Color Me" found here. Pictured above are two long string blocks, one for my red crayon and one for my yellow crayon. I'm also working on a scrappy quilt using our quilt guild's Ebeneezer quilt pattern. Pictured are red and yellow 6.5" squares and red and yellow 6.5" square 4-patch blocks for that quilt. To see what others made with yellow, go here.
I'm working on Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks for several quilt this year and felt the need for a list to reference once in awhile. Some quilt projects listed below were started last year and I hope to finish them this year. Several projects listed are new. No problem if I don't finish all of them this year. I'll work on them next year.
Yes. I have a lot of scraps, but if I want to pull fabric from my stash, I do. My stash is pretty scrappy.
My list.
1. An Eye of God block quilt. I have blocks left from last year, but not enough for a quilt.
2. A house block quilt. I have house blocks left from last year, but not enough for a quilt
3. A 16-patch block quilt. So many possibilities with a stack of 16-patch blocks. Love me a stack of colorful 16-patch blocks.
4. A string block quilt using strings with an odd color string in each blocks.
5. A 49-patch block quilt.
6. A Growing Up Odd quilt larger than the Growing Up Odd baby quilt I made last year.
7. A quilt using blocks made with eighteen 2"x 3.5" pieces. I made some blocks last year, but not enough for a quilt
8. A crayon quilt. I made a large one last year. The crayon quilt I want to make this year will be smaller and similar to the "Color Me" crayon quilt by Emily Herrick
9. A sprout quilt. Seems everyone is making sprout blocks, so I'm jumping in, too.
10. Angela's 2019 Sampler Quilt. This is going to be fun.
11. Angela's 2018 Sampler Quilt. I have blocks from last year, but not enough for a quilt.
12. A Birch Tree block quilt. Looks like fun.
13. An Ebenezer pattern quilt with blocks in seven rainbow colors.
14. Hot Pads in each rainbow color for Christmas gifts.
15. Teeny Tiny coin purses in each rainbow color for Christmas gifts.
16. Knit dishcloths in each color for Christmas gifts.Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12527472166860525332noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-377824417026124469.post-14336109735831354032019-01-30T20:23:00.000-08:002019-01-30T20:23:04.552-08:002019 RSC January Red Week 4, Sprouts, Houses, Sampler Blocks, Tiny Coin Purses, Growing Up Odd, Hot Pad

Last year I made and donated a baby quilt using "Growing Up Odd" blocks. The blocks were made with all colors of little squares. This year I thought I'd made the blocks in each month's RSC color.
It's true I love house block quilts and I make house blocks most every year. Last year I made only a few. This year I want to make more, enough for a quilt. The red house I made last year is in a row by itself, the other five I made this week.
The 2019 RSC Sampler looks like fun and I'm all in with five sampler blocks. (Fudged on the bow tie block pattern.) Started my Christmas sewing with three tiny coin purses and second hot pad, this one 8.5" square.
Last year December was super busy with last minute sewing. Pillow cases, tote bags, coin purses, hot pads/pot holders, knitted dishcloths. Think I'll try to make a few things each month so December won't be so stressful.
To see what others made with red fabric, go here.

From time to time I get comments about my large variety of scraps. True, I have a lot of scraps. Also, my stash is very scrappy. I buy a lot of fat quarters, small cuts, end of bolt pieces in clearance bins, bags of scraps at quilt shows, etc. I look at all of it as fair game for my RSC blocks, totes, pillowcases, hot pads, small purses, whatever. I save scraps 1.5" square and larger as well as strings 1.25 and wider.Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12527472166860525332noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-377824417026124469.post-36378736797139959012019-01-22T19:50:00.003-08:002019-01-23T06:40:03.542-08:002019 RSC January Red Week 3, String Blocks, Charity Baby Quilt, Doll Quilt, Hot Pad

Proof I'm having lots of fun with RED. Last year I accidentally made my Eye of God blocks in two sizes. Half of my blocks were a little larger that the other half. Now I'm working to make blocks to finish up two Eye of God quilts this year. Not a problem as both quilts have been spoken for. Pictured is a red Eye of God blocks, ten string blocks and five blocks made with 2"x 3.5" rectangles. One super scrappy hot pad make it into the picture.
A word about the ten string blocks. Each block has a string that is a color different than red. This idea I stole from another RSC participant, Janine Marie at Quilts From the Little House found here Thank you Janine. Not sure what I'm going to do with them, but they are fun to sew. Besides, I love to have stacks of blocks near the end of the year to pull and make quilts of different sizes.
My Quilt Guild had a community service sewing day to make baby quilts and youth quilts for our local Ebenezer Christian Family Center. I worked on this quilt while there, finished it at home and donated during our quilt's October meeting.

A few years ago I bought "The Everything Bag" tote bag pattern by Fons & Porter's. It makes a large tote bag. I'm not sure how many totes I have made using this pattern, but people that receive them seem to like them. I have one and use it a lot because it can easily carry a few items or several items. These were given to two grandsons with quilts in them. I call them media themed totes because the fabric strips were cut from licensed fabrics like Marvel, Disney, etc.

This is the last week of September's RSC blue scraps. Pictured are some pretty blue blocks. Love, love, love blue.
I pulled 16 string blocks from last year's RSC collection and made a charity baby quilt. I donated it during our monthly quilt guild meeting last week. It was about 41" square.

Next I pulled the 36-patch blocks made during this RSC year and make a throw quilt. After a go in the washer and dryer it finished at 51" x 62".Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12527472166860525332noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-377824417026124469.post-61430694777076304822018-08-28T07:22:00.002-07:002018-08-28T07:22:39.348-07:002018 RSC August Week 4 Growing Up Odd Baby Quilt Finish and Two Doll Quilts

No orange RSC pieces to show this week. I'm looking forward to working with September's RSC color.
Pictured above is a finished baby quilt using four Growing Up Odd blocks sashed with a pretty pink. It's quilted with a loose free motion meander and finished at 39" square. This is a charity quilt that I'll turn in during our quilt guild meeting today.

I'll also turn in these two colorful doll quilts that will go to Ebeneezer.
Next weekend is our annual quilt show. I'm still working on my quilt show challenge piece. My next post post will have pictures of quilts from our show.Sheilahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12527472166860525332noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-377824417026124469.post-82494928987021362722018-08-11T13:07:00.002-07:002018-08-11T13:07:27.385-07:002018 RSC August Orange Week 2, Orange Blocks and Super Scrappy Pot Holders

I love this Rainbow Scrap Challenge and I love orange. Pictured are four strings blocks, five 16-patch blocks, one happy house block, one 36-patch block and seven super scrappy pot holders. Orphan blocks often become pot holders.
A finish this week! I'm calling it "Fun With Crayons." I made the scrappy 5" wide string crayons last year. Here they are sashed with 2" Kona White strips. I added 5" string blocks on the left. The block patterns for the five 12.5" blocks on the right are from Lori Holt's Farm Girl Vintage book. The inner yellow border was 1.5" wide strips. The turquoise outer border was 5" wide. The binding is pieced with 10" strips in rainbow color order. It's quilted with a loose free motion meander and finished at 68" x 84".
