2014 Rainbow Scrap Challenge, January, Blue, Week 3, String Blocks
During 2013, I paper pieced some 8.5" scrappy string blocks each month during the rainbow challenge. This week I pulled those blocks, laid them on the "design floor" and decided that I wanted to piece more scrappy string blocks this year. Because I want four string blocks in each color family, some months I'll need to piece 2 blocks, some months 3 blocks, some months 4 blocks. My goal is to have 48 string blocks finished in December. Forty eight blocks would make a colorful quilt top with a layout of 6 blocks by 8 blocks.
This week I pieced two blue 8.5" string blocks as I had two blue blocks from last year. The four cute 6.5" sampler blocks in the picture were pieced using Angela's sampler block tutorials. A knitted dishcloth made it into the picture. The colorful cotton yarn made by Sugar'N Creme, is one of my favorites. I love to knit.
To see what others made with their blue scraps this week, go here Saturday morning.

Lots of great blue blocks. I want to make just string blocks this year - that's all that is left in that tub - skinnies.
ReplyDeleteLove all your blocks. I especially like the new Angela influenced blocks. That wonky tic tac toe block is so cute. I made some strings for the star blocks, but mostly just cut. Maybe I can sew some today after we come back from a fun trip to IKEA for a browse and lunch.

I think the strippy blocks will make a great rainbow quilt.
ReplyDeleteNice idea, I have never made a string block but this gives me inspiration! Going to be beautiful...
ReplyDeleteYour rainbow blocks look amazing together!
ReplyDeleteI like all your blue blocks, especially the one in the middle. It's an interesting pattern.
Your blues are looking good and so are the strings. I like string blocks a LOT, but they can get tiring to make (and there is such a mess when I make them), so a few a month is probably a good plan.
ReplyDeleteI like your string blocks. They will make a great quilt. PS I've got a design floor too!!!
ReplyDeleteLooks great Sheila!! Gosh it is hard to believe that I made my string scrap quilt from 2012 blocks.....where does the time go! I'm starting a little late but I decided I still have tons of scraps and want to make another string qult.
ReplyDeleteWay to make a plan for your string Rainbow BOM! That will be so pretty when all done! Too fun that you are doing the sampler blocks too. I am really enjoying that and not sure why I hesitated joining in!
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy seeing the blocks you post for the RSC and reading how you plan to use them. The string block idea sounds great. It may be another idea I steal from you.
