2014 RSC July, Rainbow String Quilt Finished

Much of this week was spent piecing my RSC string quilt top. Some of the 8.5" paper pieced string blocks were made during last year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge. Feels good to have this rainbow quilt finished.
One of the large blocks of four 8.5" string blocks is black on white strings. Another large block is four 8.5" string blocks of small colorful prints. I feel they add a bright lightness to the quilt top. The large blocks are sashed with 2.5" strips of Kona white fabric. The borders are 2.5" colorful squares and 2.5" white squares.

The backing is 18 fat quarters. The batting is low loft cotton White and Natural. It's quilted with a loose free motion meander using white cotton thread. The binding is a stripped green fabric print. After a go in the washer and dryer it finished at 62" x 81".
I have a few more red blocks that I'll work on this week and post next week with blocks made in the chosen August RSC color. It's been fun playing with red.

2014 RSC July, Red, Week 3

After playing with yummy reds this week, I'll add four 8.5" cats, six 5.5" cocoa mugs, and one 6.5" sampler block to my collections. A dark red cotton knitted dishcloth made it into the picture. I've started sewing together the 8.5" rainbow string blocks that I've been slowly working on since January of last year. Hopefully I'll have a scrappy rainbow string quilt, or at least a quilt top flimsy finished by next Saturday.

Dark Batiks Jelly Roll Race Quilt with Spacers Finished

I try to have at least one comfort/spare quilt made ahead, ready for when I might need one quickly. Sadly I needed to gift my spare comfort quilt last week. That meant I needed to make another. A year or two ago, I bought a Dark Batik Jelly Roll on sale to make a Jelly Roll Race quilt with spacers.  To make this quilt a little longer I pulled some strips from stash and added a few rows.

For spacers and binding, I bought 2/3 yard of a dark batik. That was cutting it close. The backing was pieced with batiks from stash. I consider this quilt another stash buster.
It's quilted with horizontal organic lines using my sewing machine's walking foot, a 3.1 stitch length, variegated green thread in the needle, and a light blue thread in the bobbin. After a go in the washer and dryer it finished a soft 55.5" x 66".

2014 Rainbow Scrap Challenge July, Red, Week 1

It's difficult to believe the year is half over. Thought I'm happy to say that I've finished many UFOs and previously planned projects the first six months of this year, I had hoped to have finished more. My plans for the next six months will be to see how many more I can work through and finish.
I enjoyed seeing everyone RSC progress. The half year progress post link ups was a great idea. I'm grateful for this challenge for without it my scraps and trimmings would take over my sewing area. I've worked through a lot of scraps this year.
July's scrap challenge color is red. Yah!. After playing with my red scraps this week I'll add six 8.5" blocks and three 6.5" sampler blocks to my collections. A couple cotton knitted dishcloths made it into the picture. To see what other made with their red scraps go here.

2014 RSC Mid Year Progress Post

This is the second year I've made scrappy string triangles. My goal is four triangles in each month's color. I made four red triangles last year so this month will be a triangle free month for me. I think I'll make a baby quilt with them in December.

This is the second year I've paper pieced 8.5" string blocks. My goal is four blocks in each month's color. Six string blocks from last year didn't make it into this picture and will be in the next picture. I need 42 or 48 blocks for a small quilt.

This is the second year I've made spool blocks. Ten of the spools were made last year. I'm making more spools, a star, a heart and a 16 patch block each month. The string blocks in the bottom row should have been in the previous picture. I'll make either a large quilt or some small quilts with these blocks.

I need to sash 42 cat blocks for a small child's quilt.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with all these coco mug blocks. They are cute and fun to piece. Maybe a wall hanging or small quilt.

This is the third year I've made Bonnie Hunter's Happy Scrappy House blocks. I need 42 house blocks to make a quilt.

I hope to make a small child quilt with these scrappy string 7" blocks in December.

If I have time, I'll make a large quilt  with these cute 6.5" sampler blocks in December. Might be January.
