2015 RSC June Light Blue Week 3, RSC Tumbler Quilt Finished, Child Tote Bag

Not a lot of scrappy light blue activity to show for the week. The two crumb blocks I made last week are now a pot holder. Working from my crumb collection, I made two more 8.5" crumb blocks. They will become a pot holder this week. A cotton knitted dishcloth made it into the picture.
To see what others made with their scraps, go here Saturday morning.

I finally sewed together the 5" tumbler units I cut from scraps during the 2013 RSC. They are now a quilt with a medium blue border.

I pieced the backing with fabric from stash and a row of string blocks made with strips from my bin of 1.5" strips. It's quilted with a loose free motion meander. The binding is a purple print. After a go in the washer and dryer it finished at 58" x 84.5".
Bonnie Hunter announced on Facebook that the 2015 Ender Leader Challenge will be tumblers. I'll be making another tumbler quilt this year.

This week I made a child size tote with some Laura Burch prints.

For the pattern I took a sheet of copy paper and cut 2" x 2" squares from two corners. Using the pattern, I cut two pieces of outer bag fabric, two pieces of lining fabric and two pieces of batting. I also cut two piece of medium weight fusible interfacing which I have already fused to the outer bag pieces. I cut two rectangle pieces 18" x 4" for the handles. (I trimmed the two pieces in the picture.) I added a piece of batting, 1" x 18" to each handle to give them more body. An interior pocket is optional, but I wanted one for this little bag. That's the square of blue fabric laying on one piece of the lining. Actually it's folded in half in the picture. The 2.5" x 8" rectangle will be the loop. I was going to use the red button in the picture, but felt a pink one looked better.

There is a close up showing the loop and button closure. There are so many ways to make totes. Lots of YouTube tutorial video clips. At least three ways to make boxed bottoms. I'll be making more totes in more sizes.

you rock Sheila! I love your tumbler quilt. Blue was an excellent choice for the border! The tote bag is so cute. Some little girl will adore it! Pretty crumb potholder too. You are going to have an amazing collection of rainbow crumb potholders. I love it all :)

That tumbler quilt is gorgeous! I found a printout of a 3 inch one at some point... I wonder where I put it? I must find it and make a template... I think I'll finally join in on Bonnie L&E on the year she does them! I think I need to go play with some light blue tonight so I have something to show for the week.

How nice to see that Laurel Burch horse fabric again! I made a bag for a dear friend several years ago in a different colourway. The tote is terrific, and I love the button closure. :-) And...I have that rainbow kitties fabric! :-) ... used it on the back of a Christmas panel of hers. She was such a cool artist; love her work.

Your RSC tumbler quilt looks great, and I love the zig zag stripe in the back. I too like LB fabric and the little tote bag is adorable. What size did you start off with? I'm thinking Christmas presents for nieces!

I see some of Bill coming to visit you today or tomorrow. I've been teasing mine all week, they named the storm after him. (He likes the idea.)
Love your blues. The tumbler is lovely. I like that you used a purple binding. Good job.
The bag is the best! Love the colors and shape. I'm sure you have a little girl in mind. She's going to love it.
Stay dry my friend.
Hugs

The tumbler quilt is a great finish. It seems like a very good LandE project. The purse is so sweet, especially the pink button finish.

I love tumbler quilts. You just can't go wrong with the tumbler shape if you are making a scrappy quilt. Yours is very nice.

The bag is darling! Your tumbler quilt is a perfect size. What size are the tumblers? Did you use an accuquilt to cut them?

Tumbler quilts always make me smile, and yours is in such happy rainbow colours. I have lords of 3" tumblers cut out waiting for more to add - I follow Bonnie Hunter but no mention as far as I know on her blog about the Leader Ender, I must get organised with Facebook!
Tote Bag - beautiful Laurel Burch fabric and thanks for giving measurements.
