2014 Rainbow Scrap Challenge, January, Blue, Week 2 and a Rainbow Quilt Finish

My plan was to sew together the 48 "16 patch" rainbow blocks that I made last year into a quilt with a 6x8 quilt block arrangement. But I had pulled 4 of them to make pot holders for last minute Christmas presents. That made me 4 blocks short. I pulled 4 rainbow scrappy star blocks I made last year and mixed them with the 16 patch blocks.

I went to my stash to make a backing. Last year I made three Bee In My Bonnet Silo Barn blocks. They were fun to make, but I didn't have time to finish the "Nine Block Silo Barn Sew Along". I found myself me with 3 large, fun orphan blocks. Those three blocks and some bright fabrics from my stash made a fun, scrappy backing.
It's quilted with a loose free motion meander all over and machine bound with green fabric, again from my stash. After a go in the washer and dryer, it finished at  46.5" x 64". This quilt was a true scrap and stash buster.

The scrappy rainbow pot holders/hot pads that I made last year were nice gifts so this year I'll continue to make at least one a month. The knitted dish cloths were a hit, too. I'll continue to knit them in rainbow colors.
Angela is posting 6.5" block instructions this year for a Sampler Quilt. Here are the first four made with some blue scraps.
To see what others made with their blue scraps this week, go here Saturday morning.

Love the rainbow quilt with the stars! The colors are amazing and so cheery! The backing is wonderful, too, and rainbow colored.
Love your blue blocks - looks like you are following along with the sampler patterns, too. I love that quarter log cabin block. I gotta try some like that.

The stars were an inspirational addition! What a stunner of a quilt. Great job, and the barns on the back make it two quilts in one!

Love the few stars in the mix - just a cute pop to it. And the back - ingenious!! Two quilts in one, gotta love that outcome. I won't get to my blues this month - hopefully will catch up next month.

Love your quilt - front and back and binding! Your blue sampler blocks look great. I hope to do a little sewing tonight and finish up this week's blocks.

Love the quilt and binding! Have you seen my hearts layout from the RSC? I'm loving it a lot -- my favourite project ever. As soon as I've finished catching up with blogs, I'm off to the sewing room to start piecing some blocks together that I made in the RSC 2011 and 2012!

You may have added the stars to fill in for missing blocks, but they truly make the quilt sparkle. The barns on the back are absolutely adorable. What a fun quilt. You have gotten so much done for the new challenge already! You continue to inspire.

A perfect situation is one where you run out of something and the substitution improves the design. And that is what happened with your star block addition! I love pieced backs, and your barn blocks make a special one.

Love your last year's Rainbow BOM quilt and LOVE the back too! I have the Quilty Barn along stuff saved as I never got to it, but maybe one day! Glad you are joining in on the 6 inch sampler blocks, me too! So much fun to see them all come together!

Your quilt is perfection - the addition of the stars adds a lot of dimension and the barns and silos on the backing add so much, too! Really a stand-out job all around.

The quilt looks great! I never would have guessed that the stars were not part of the original plan. The backing is so special, it looks like a quilt in its own right. I love the quilt blocks on the sides of the barns. Lori has such fun patterns and you really put them to good use.

The stars fit seamlessly and don't seem like an add-on at all!
