Colorful trees, quarter square triangles, 4-patches, and honeycombs. Numerous tiny pieces in those blocks! Weeks 8 through 11 are in pictured. Nine week to go and I should have a wall hanging.

2014 Rainbow Scrap Challenge, January, Blue, Week 4
The 8.5" Spool blocks in the picture were made during the 2013 RSC. This year I'll make more spools to add to this collection.
After a week of playing with blue scraps I'll add four 6.5" sampler sew along blocks, a 8.5" spool block, a couple 5.5" Coco Mug blocks pieced with a Lori Holt pattern and a 8.5" cat block that is half of a cat block pattern by Patti Carey called Kool Kats Kwilt. Her pattern was published in a magazine years ago. I'm not sure what I'll do with this block, but it was fun to make. A knitted dishcloth made it into the picture, too.
I have a lot more blue scraps, but I'm ready to play with another color in February. To see what others made with their blue scraps, go here.

Goodnight Irene Sew Along, January Progress
Year before last I won the Grand Prize drawing in Melissa of Happy Quilting's Tetris Sew Along Challenge. With that gift certificate from Intrepid Threads I got some lovely Amy Butler prints. I'm using those fabrics and some black on white prints for background to make my quilt in the Goodnight Irene Sew Along hosted by Terry of Terry's Treasures. Pictured are the first two rows.
And here is a close up. (Sorry. Night pictures.) Because I want to make my quilt to fit a twin bed, I'll make at least 10 blocks each month.

2014 Rainbow Scrap Challenge, January, Blue, Week 3, String Blocks
During 2013, I paper pieced some 8.5" scrappy string blocks each month during the rainbow challenge. This week I pulled those blocks, laid them on the "design floor" and decided that I wanted to piece more scrappy string blocks this year. Because I want four string blocks in each color family, some months I'll need to piece 2 blocks, some months 3 blocks, some months 4 blocks. My goal is to have 48 string blocks finished in December. Forty eight blocks would make a colorful quilt top with a layout of 6 blocks by 8 blocks.
This week I pieced two blue 8.5" string blocks as I had two blue blocks from last year. The four cute 6.5" sampler blocks in the picture were pieced using Angela's sampler block tutorials. A knitted dishcloth made it into the picture. The colorful cotton yarn made by Sugar'N Creme, is one of my favorites. I love to knit.

Celtic Solstice Mystery Quilt Progress
Shown are 32 blocks of the 49 needed for the smaller version of my Bonnie Hunter Celtic Solstice Mystery Quilt. So far, looking good. Would be nice to have this a completed quilt top soon.

2014 Rainbow Scrap Challenge, January, Blue, Week 2 and a Rainbow Quilt Finish
My plan was to sew together the 48 "16 patch" rainbow blocks that I made last year into a quilt with a 6x8 quilt block arrangement. But I had pulled 4 of them to make pot holders for last minute Christmas presents. That made me 4 blocks short. I pulled 4 rainbow scrappy star blocks I made last year and mixed them with the 16 patch blocks.
I went to my stash to make a backing. Last year I made three Bee In My Bonnet Silo Barn blocks. They were fun to make, but I didn't have time to finish the "Nine Block Silo Barn Sew Along". I found myself me with 3 large, fun orphan blocks. Those three blocks and some bright fabrics from my stash made a fun, scrappy backing.
It's quilted with a loose free motion meander all over and machine bound with green fabric, again from my stash. After a go in the washer and dryer, it finished at 46.5" x 64". This quilt was a true scrap and stash buster.
The scrappy rainbow pot holders/hot pads that I made last year were nice gifts so this year I'll continue to make at least one a month. The knitted dish cloths were a hit, too. I'll continue to knit them in rainbow colors.
Angela is posting 6.5" block instructions this year for a Sampler Quilt. Here are the first four made with some blue scraps.

Quilty Fun Sew Along, Weeks 1 - 7
The Fat Quarter Shop is hosting a Quilty Fun Sew Along, a wall hanging using a "Lori Holt of Bee In My Bonnet" pattern. For more information about this sew along, click the "Quilty Fun" button on the side of my blog.
My blocks from the first seven weeks are in the picture above. Apples, dancing stars, court house steps, baskets, chevrons, geese and mugs. Thankfully there was a week break for Christmas. It gave me a chance to catch up. Week 8 block instructions will be posted this week, January 6. I'm using bright, colorful, fun fabrics from my stash and scraps to make my blocks. The sashing is Kona white fabric.

2014 Rainbow Scrap Challenge, January, Blue, Week 1, Happy Scrappy Houses
The top 20 Happy Scrappy Houses were made in 2012 and 2013. The two blue houses in the bottom row were made this week, 2014. I pieced more than 20 houses in 2012 and 2013, but some were pulled and made into donation blocks. Several were made into hot pads/pot holders for presents. This year I'll make house blocks until I have enough for a Happy Scrappy House quilt. The pattern is free on Bonnie Hunter's website here.
I added borders on the 4 bright blue houses.
Because my hot pads/pot holders and knitted dishcloths are well received presents, I'll make more each month. I also plan to make more spool blocks, crossroads blocks, and string blocks to add to those I made last year.
Many of the scrappy blocks I pieced and scrappy units I cut last year will be made into quilts during January and February. I'll post pictures of my progress in my RSC weekly posts.
Our 2014 Rainbow Scrappy Challenge host, Angela, plans to post piecing instructions for 6.5" blocks this year. When we sew our blocks together at the end of the year, we'll have a Sampler Quilt. Since I love Sampler Quilts, this sounds like fun to me.

Bonnie Hunter's Celtic Solstice Mystery Quilt Clue 5
I cut 300 pieces of fabric, sewed them with 100 HST's made in clue 3 and make 100 blocks to add to my BH Mystery blocks collection. I love these blocks. Tricky if I don't concentrate. Had to unsew some incorrectly turned yellow and orange HST's.
Then a surprise!. Bonnie gave us the big reveal January 1! Here are the two unit blocks we'll use to piece the center of the quilt top. It's going to be a beautiful.
To find instructions for the 5 clues and the final reveal, use the button on the side of my bar to go to Quiltville.blogspot.com.
I'm going to take a Celtic Solstice break. January's 2014 Rainbow Scrap Challenge color is blue and I want to play with some blue scraps.
Happy New Year : D
